How to identify your Microsoft SQL Server version, build and edition, using an unofficial build chart of all SQL Server releases and updates.

How to identify your SQL Server version, build and edition. An unofficial build chart lists all known SQL Server Service Packs (SP), Cumulative Updates (CU), patches, hotfixes and other builds that have been released, of MS SQL Server 2019, 2017, 2016, 2014, 2012, 2008 R2, 2008, 2005, 2000, 7.0, 6.5 and 6.0.

Query your SQL Server's build number with T-SQL and look it up in the unofficial SQL Server build chart, to see exactly which version, service pack or cumulative update you are running.

Find your SQL Server version and build

To find the version, build number and edition of your SQL Server instance, run one of these queries, for example in SQL Server Management Studio:

SELECT @@VERSION;

SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('ProductVersion') AS ProductVersion,
       SERVERPROPERTY('ProductLevel') AS ProductLevel,
       SERVERPROPERTY('Edition') AS Edition;

Then look up the build number in the SQL Server builds list, to see which Service Pack or Cumulative Update is installed and whether a newer one is available.

Behind on updates? Here is how to install SQL Server cumulative updates silently and update SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) automatically.

I write these posts in my spare time, based on real problems from my day job as a sysadmin. If this one saved you some debugging time, a small donation is much appreciated. Thanks! 🙏
